The pure aluminum rod we produce with grades 1A90, 1A93, 1A97 and 1A99 (99.99%). For aluminum alloy rod we make 5 different series, 1XXX(1350/1370), 4XXX(4043/4047), 5XXX(5154), 6XXX(6201), and 8XXX(8176/8030).
It becomes more and more popular that using aluminum alloy conductors to replace copper to produce flexible cables especially for class-5(IEC60228), widely used to wind energy anti-torsion cable, photovoltaic generation system cable, industrial robot cables, 5G base station, mining cable, battery cable, EV charging plug & station, automotive cable, HV cables and harness wire.
In China we are the biggest manufacturer of class-5 flexible conductors especially for large cross section. In the below we will make a concrete analysis of 8XXX conductor.
Aluminum Alloy Cable 8000 series, is one of significant electric conductor material, have been used for more than half century in North America. Our company import continuous casting & rolling line Continuus-Properzi from Italy for manufacturing AA8030 and AA8176.
Conductor Property
The material meets the standards of CSA of Canada, NEC of America, and ASTM B800. The alloy after been annealed, conductivity could be more than 62%IACS. Also it has light weight, only 1/3 of copper. As a result, alloy cable has length 2 times longer than copper cable for same electrical property, and has weight 1/2 lighter of copper cable for same capacity.
Corrosion Resistance
Aluminum material is better than copper for corrosion resistance, but aluminum alloy is the best, as it is composite with rare earth metal, especially against with chemical corrosion.
Creep Resistance
As aluminum alloy has Ferrum, which highly increased tensile strength, also to get creep tendency lowered under heating and pressure. Compared the copper cable designed at 30 years in life, aluminum alloy could have 40 years.
Expansion Coefficient
Thermal expansivity, is used to calculate the size of material in temperature changing. The thermal expansivity of aluminum alloy is little higher than copper. However, in order to having connection reliability and safety, copper-aluminum connecting terminal will be highly recommended. Also this kind of terminal can solve thermal expansion and electro-chemical corrosion.
Mechanical Property
VS Copper Cable
Rebound performance: 40% lower
Flexibility: 25% higher
Bending radius: 7 times minimum
VS Pure Aluminum Cable
Flexibility: almost same, but not easy broken
Bending radius: 7 times minimum
Tensile strength: 55% higher (Hard), 20% higher (annealed)
Elongation: 30% higher
The structure of interlock armored cable, adopts 5000 series alloy tape which is non magnetic material, has higher property of corrosion resistance and bending ability, also better shielding and flame retardancy are achievable.
